Puerto Rico to set vote for admission into the United States: "...a bill that would enable the celebration of a special election this upcoming Nov. 8 in which one question will be presented to the voters of Puerto Rico, all of them American citizens. That question is simple: Do you want Puerto Rico to be admitted as a state of the U.S. of America, yes or no?” Aponte-Hernandez said.

Puerto Rico to set vote for admission into the United States

By CB Online Staff

Former speaker and current member of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives José Aponte Hernández announced Tuesday the filling of a bill that will enable a special status plebiscite election in November of this year in which the American citizens on the island would vote for admission into the U.S. as its newest state.

“I’m pleased to announce that the delegations of the New Progressive Party (NPP) in both chambers of our Legislature, the Senate and the House of Representatives have filed a bill that would enable the celebration of a special election this upcoming Nov. 8 in which one question will be presented to the voters of Puerto Rico, all of them American citizens. That question is simple: Do you want Puerto Rico to be admitted as a state of the U.S. of America, yes or no?” Aponte-Hernandez said.

The bills were championed by the NPP, which was created in 1968 to advocate statehood for Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory since the Spanish-American War of 1898.

“The filing of these two historical bills are a continuation of a campaign aimed at forcing Washington. D.C., to respect the will of the Puerto Rican voters, which opposed the current colonial political status. In a November 2012 status plebiscite, a solid majority of 54% voted against continuing with territorial designation. We want equality with the rest of the American citizens living in the other 50 states. Those bills are another step toward that path. The path to equality, the path toward statehood,” the statehood leader added.

For the author of the bill, Senate Minority Leader Larry Seilhamer, this action marks a “game-changer” for the American citizens residing on the island.
