Latin American Herald Tribune: From Jail, Brazil’s Lula Calls for Unity to Stop Fascism

PRN-Latino News from mikenova (16 sites)
From Jail, Brazil’s Lula Calls for Unity to Stop Fascism SAO PAULO – Former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva broke on Wednesday the silence he had maintained ahead of Brazil’s presidential runoff, calling on Brazilians to support candidate Fernando Haddad to stop the advance of “fascism,” referring to far-right front-runner Jair Bolsonaro. From his cell in Curitiba, where he is serving a 12-year sentence on a corruption conviction, Lula sent a letter to urge Brazilians to vote for his successor as standard-bearer of the center-left Workers Party (PT) to ensure “the survival of the democratic pact” in Brazil.“We cannot allow despair to lead Brazil toward a fascist adventure as we have seen in many countries throughout history,” he wrote, alluding to the 1964-1985 military regime, much admired by Bolsonaro. The one-time union leader had refrained from issuing any statements during the campaign for the runoff, so as not to steal the limelight from Haddad, who assumed the PT candidacy on Sept.

German President Says Strong, United, Stable Spain Important to His Country MADRID – Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier told Spain’s King Felipe VI on Wednesday that their countries faced similar challenges in some regions and his country wanted to see a united Spain.Steinmeier made his comments in the Spanish capital Madrid during a luncheon in the presence of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia.“I am delighted on behalf of my country to have you at our side as an upstanding advocate of democracy, the rule of law, open society and European integration,” said the German president, adding: “You should know that a strong, united and stable Spain is important to us Germans.”Steinmeier warned that nationalism posed a threat to a “united” Europe: “Nationalists are exploiting the longing of many people for stability and guidance in order to construct a narrative of ‘us against them’ from the ‘us’ of the nation,” he said.Steinmeier later met Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez at his official Moncloa Palace residence, where the pair discussed various topics of bilateral interest.“I have reviewed with President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the axes of the last European Council: Brexit, internal security and the migration challenge,” tweeted Sanchez.

Latin American Herald Tribune: PSG Gets Late Goal to Salvage 2-2 Draw with Napoli

PRN-Latino News from mikenova (16 sites)
PSG Gets Late Goal to Salvage 2-2 Draw with Napoli PARIS – Angel Di Maria’s goal in stoppage time allowed Paris Saint-Germain to post a 2-2 draw in Wednesday’s Champions League Group C contest against Napoli.PSG, whose billionaire Qatari owners have spent vast sums in pursuit of a Champions League title, were on the verge of a second defeat that would have sounded the death knell for their hopes in the tournament. The draw leaves PSG in third place in the group with 4 points, 1 behind Napoli and 2 less than leaders Liverpool, who clobbered Red Star Belgrade 4-0 in Wednesday’s other Group C tie.Winners in all 10 of their Ligue 1 matches this season, PSG continue to struggle in the Champions League and the 50,000 in the stands at Parc des Princes watched the home team fall behind twice to Napoli.Behind the bench for Napoli was Carlo Ancelotti, a former PSG manager who arrayed his forces with the intent of stifling the star-studded French side to take the crowd out of the match. While PSG started with energy and Kylian Mbappe created a chance in the 2nd minute, the momentum melted away in the face of Napoli’s dominance in midfield.Dries Mertens had an opportunity to put Napoli on the board in the 24th minute, but his shot hit the cross-bar.Five minutes later, Lorenzo Insigne converted on a magnificent long ball from Callejon to put the visitors ahead 1-0.The reaction from the hosts was slow to develop and when Neymar threaded the ball to an onrushing Mbappe in the 38th minute, the French international was bested by Napoli goalkeeper David Ospina.PSG coach Thomas Tuchel adjusted his tactics for the second half and Neymar threatened the Napoli goal in the 50th minute only to be denied by Ospina. The hosts finally pulled level at the hour mark, when Napoli’s Mario Rui inadvertently diverted a Meunier cross into his own net.As the match entered the final stretch, Napoli surged ahead again with a goal by Mertens and only the last-second heroics of Di Maria rescued PSG.

Latin American Herald Tribune: Colombian Opposition Asks EU to Step In on Peace Agreement

PRN-Latino News from mikenova (16 sites)
Colombian Opposition Asks EU to Step In on Peace Agreement BRUSSELS – A Colombian opposition party asked the European Union on Wednesday to step in to demand the Colombian government implements the commitments stipulated in a peace agreement with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).The main opposition party in Colombia, Colombia Humana, led by Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego, sent a letter to the EU’s Representative of Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, accusing the Colombian president, Ivan Duque, of slowing down a peace process brokered by the previous government.Petro said in the letter that Duque had effectively put the breaks on the process and failed to follow through with the truth commission, a central element for the transition to peace, which involves acknowledging the victims of the FARC, having an open conversation about the events that unfolded during the Columbian armed conflict between 1964-2017 and the implementation of sanctions and punishments.Petro added that without a truth commission peace would be impossible in Colombia. The leader of the opposition also decried that another clause in the peace agreement that had been halted was the restitution and redistribution of land, previously controlled by the guerrillas, to farmers.Of the 8 million hectares of land that were occupied by FARC rebel forces, only 4 percent have been returned to rural communities. The opposition group staged a demonstration Wednesday outside the European Parliament and reminded EU lawmakers that the EU Trust Fund for Colombia required the full implementation of the clauses stipulated in the peace agreement. The protest coincides with the Colombian president’s visit to Brussels for an official meeting with Mogherini.

Latin American Herald Tribune: Liverpool Gets Back on Track in Routine 4-0 Win over Red Star Belgrade

PRN-Latino News from mikenova (16 sites)
Liverpool Gets Back on Track in Routine 4-0 Win over Red Star Belgrade LIVERPOOL, England – Liverpool has rebounded emphatically from a loss to Napoli in its previous Champions League Group C match, routing Red Star Belgrade 4-0 Wednesday night at Anfield Stadium. The Reds got an outstanding performance from Swiss midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri, who helped orchestrate a scoring play that Roberto Firmino finished off in the 20th minute and showed exquisite touch on a pass that set up Mohamed Salah for a goal in the 44th minute.Red Star, for its part, was timid offensively in the first half and failed to put Liverpool under pressure even when it enjoyed possession of the ball in the early going. The visitors came out more aggressively in the second half, but that left them vulnerable to the Premier League club’s potent arsenal of weapons.Salah scored the third goal from the penalty spot in the 50th minute after Red Star captain Filip Stojkovic was whistled for a questionable foul in the area on Sadio Mane.Liverpool’s final goal also came via a penalty, which was called on forward Ben Nabouhane for heading the ball off his own arm 10 minutes before second-half stoppage time.Salah had already been replaced by a substitute, so Mane converted that last try from the 12-yard mark to cap off the routine win.The Reds, who had lost their last Group C match to Napoli 1-0 on Oct.

Latin American Herald Tribune: Spate of Package Bombs Sent to Key Democrats Leads Trump to Call for Unity

PRN-Latino News from mikenova (16 sites)
Spate of Package Bombs Sent to Key Democrats Leads Trump to Call for Unity WASHINGTON – Leading Democrats – including former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton – were the targets of up to five package bombs, a series of attacks that motivated President Donald Trump on Wednesday to issue a call for unity. The first news about the incidents came from New York, where Clinton late on Tuesday received a suspicious package at her home in Westchester County, near New York City. Then, the Secret Service reported that a second package sent to the Washington residence of the Obamas – Barack and Michelle – had been intercepted.Over the subsequent hours, the names of more people who had received suspicious package became known, including former CIA Director John Brennan. The latest former top official on the target list was ex-US Attorney General Eric Holder, but the package sent to him never arrived and was returned to the listed sender, former Democratic National Committee chairperson and Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. The FBI later determined that all the suspicious packages detected so far included the address of Schultz’s office in Florida as the sender. All the packages contained homemade bombs similar to the one police found and detonated on Monday at the New York state residence of billionaire philanthropist George Soros. The White House issued a statement in which it vehemently rejected “these terrorizing acts” and called them “despicable.”“We condemn the attempted violent attacks recently made against President Obama, President Clinton, Secretary Clinton and other public figures.

Latin American Herald Tribune: Zimbabwe Allows Import of Basic Products to Face Supply Crisis

PRN-Latino News from mikenova (16 sites)
Zimbabwe Allows Import of Basic Products to Face Supply Crisis HARARE – The government of Zimbabwe has lifted restrictions on the import of basic products, as the African country has plunged into a supply crisis on the back of a worsening economic situation, official sources reported Wednesday. The government seeks to replace the stocks in supermarkets after three weeks of compulsive purchasing by citizens, who are buying up products for fear of future shortages.State-run newspaper The Herald quoted information minister Monica Mutsvangwa as saying that the “Cabinet further observed that owing to panic and speculative buying, products which used to be sold over a month, are now being sold in just three hours’ time, a situation which is completely unsustainable.”Among the goods that can now be imported into the country are cooked beans, bottled water, cooking oil, flour, peanut butter, sugar, soap and fertilizers. The fear among the population was unleashed earlier this month following a joint statement by Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube and Central Bank governor John Mangudya regarding a new package of economic stabilization measures.Among these measures was a 2 percent tax on e-payments – one of the most frequent forms of payment in the country where cash dollars are scarce – which sparked protests by citizens and trade unionists.Zimbabwe began to restrict imports two years ago in order to promote the local economy and only receives some products coming mostly from neighboring South Africa.Zimbabwe adopted the US dollar in 2009, but the cash has disappeared from banks in the last two years, after being almost impossible to obtain at ATMs.The current crisis comes less than a year since President Emmerson Mnangagwa rose to power after succeeding Robert Mugabe in December 2017 following a military intervention that put an end to the latter’s leadership of almost four decades.

Barça Beats Inter Milan 2-0 with Injured Messi in the Stands BARCELONA – FC Barcelona showed on Wednesday that it can win without Lionel Messi, defeating Inter Milan 2-0 in a Champions League match as the injured superstar watched from the stands.Barça remains perfect in Champions League play and leads Group C with nine points, three more than Inter, while Tottenham Hotspur and PSV Eindhoven each have a point.Messi, his broken arm in a sling, and son Thiago were among the more than 86,000 people who nearly filled Camp Nou for the contest.Aside from the first 10 minutes of the second half, when Inter enjoyed a spell of possession, Barcelona was clearly the better side. The hosts’ first chance came in the 18th minute, a Clement Lenglet header that didn’t miss by much, two minutes before Mauro Icardi failed to exploit Inter’s best opportunity of the half. After missing the target in the 28th minute, Rafinha put the hosts up 1-0 in the 32nd with an assist from Luis Suarez.Matias Vecino tried his luck against Barça keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen in the 38th minute after cutting off an attempted clearance by Lenglet.Inter’s Miranda got in the way of a Philippe Coutinho free kick that could have made it 2-0 for Barcelona in the final minute before the break. The Italian squad started the second half in a higher gear and sub Matteo Politano forced a save from Ter Stegen before squandering a defensive blunder by Arthur in the 51st minute.Inter quickly ran out of gas, however, and the home side reclaimed the initiative, as Suarez tested visiting keeper Samir Handanovic just before the hour mark.Coutinho hit the post in the 71st minute and Barça fumbled several more chances before Jordi Alba put the match to bed with a strike in the 83rd minute.

Latin American Herald Tribune: Nicaragua Holding 558 Political Prisoners, Opposition Says

PRN-Latino News from mikenova (16 sites)
Nicaragua Holding 558 Political Prisoners, Opposition Says MANAGUA – At least 558 people are being held as political prisoners in Nicaragua for participating in protests against President Daniel Ortega, the Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy said on Wednesday. The number of detainees is more than double the number acknowledged by the government, which classifies them as terrorists and “coup-mongers.”The prisoners remain “illegally detained” in police lockups and in maximum-security prisons, according to the Alliance.Among the prisoners are 512 men, 36 of whom have been found guilty of terrorism and other offenses, and 46 women, of whom five have been found guilty of crimes, the Alliance said.“The situation of insecurity and lack of peace in the country is graphically shown with the number of people imprisoned for exercising their right to protest,” the Alianza’s Azahalea Solis told reporters upon presenting the figures.Humanitarian organizations say that the crisis in Nicaragua has resulted in between 325 and 528 dead since it erupted in April, although the government says that 199 people have died. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights have blamed the government for “more than 300 deaths.”Ortega denies the accusations and says that the wave of protests constitutes an attempted coup d’etat. The protests began on April 18 over a few quickly rescinded changes to the pension system but morphed into the demand for the resignation of Ortega, who was re-elected in 2016 with more than 70 percent of the vote.
