Latin American Herald Tribune: Girona Deepens Valencia’s Woes with 1-0 Win in La Liga

Girona Deepens Valencia’s Woes with 1-0 Win in La Liga VALENCIA, Spain – Girona got a solid performance from its keeper and a goal shortly after halftime in a 1-0 victory on Saturday at Mestalla Stadium over Valencia, which has gone winless in its last four Spanish-league matches.Neither team was clearly in control at the beginning, with both clubs trying either to make surprise runs on the counter-attack or attempt long-range passes.Valencia started to seize the initiative offensively as the first half wore on, but Girona left little space for the hosts to operate over the first half-hour and generally kept the pressure off of net minder Yassine Bounou. The key play of the first half came in the 34th minute, when the video assistant referee (VAR) system ruled that the ball had gone out-of-bounds before Valencia midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia received a cross and powered a shot that ricocheted off a defender and into Girona’s goal. The game remained scoreless at the intermission even though the hosts picked up their intensity over the final 10 minutes of the first half and had two excellent chances to score.Bounou snuffed out one of those opportunities when he made a save on a header by Rodrigo; the second chance then came and went when Santi Mina clanked a shot off the crossbar following another save by the Girona net minder. But that momentum did not carry over into the second half, as the visitors went ahead shortly after the intermission on a play facilitated by an error by Kondogbia.Although Brazilian keeper Neto made a great save to deny an initial scoring chance, Girona midfielder Pere Pons put the deflection into the back of the net in the 48th minute.Down on the scoreboard, Valencia became even more determined to at least salvage a draw and laid siege to Girona’s penalty area. But the visitors’ defense proved up the task and was further bolstered when head coach Eusebio Sacristan replaced forward Seydou Doumbia with central defender Pedro Alcala. With the win, Girona has moved provisionally into ninth place in La Liga with 16 points.Valencia (11 points), which qualified for the 2018-2019 Champions League thanks to a strong domestic performance last season, remains mired in a slump and is currently in 14th place in La Liga after 11 games.

Latin American Herald Tribune: Asia Bibi’s Lawyer Flees Pakistan Fearing for His Life

PRN-Latino News from mikenova (16 sites)
Asia Bibi’s Lawyer Flees Pakistan Fearing for His Life ISLAMABAD – Saif Mulook, the lawyer of Christian woman Asia Bibi, who was acquitted of blasphemy by the Supreme Court of Pakistan after spending eight years on death row, fled the country on Saturday in fear for his life. The lawyer told EFE that he decided to leave Pakistan on Saturday morning after protests led by the Islamist Tehreek-i-Labaik (TLP) party against Asia’s acquittal paralyzed parts of the country.Mulook, who did not wish to indicate the country he fled to, said he would “love” to return to Pakistan to defend the Christian woman, who now faces an appeal against her acquittal, which was presented before the Supreme Court.Asia’s death sentence for blasphemy was repealed on Wednesday after the two women who accused her were found to have contradicted themselves and lied.Almost immediately after the court’s decision was announced, Islamists throughout Pakistan took to the streets, paralyzing much of the country for three days. The Christian woman, a mother of five, was accused in 2009 by two other women of allegedly making offensive comments against the Prophet Muhammad.A court condemned her to death in 2010 and she lost an appeal before the Lahore High Court four years later.Pakistan’s harsh anti-blasphemy law was established during British colonial rule to avoid religious clashes, but several changes to the law in the 1980s promoted by dictator Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq led its abuse.

Latin American Herald Tribune: Chile’s Easter Island Aims to Become Self-Sustainable

PRN-Latino News from mikenova (16 sites)
Chile’s Easter Island Aims to Become Self-Sustainable HANGA ROA, Chile – Easter Island seeks to become self-sustainable and waste-free by means of a comprehensive plan that also addresses environmental education, the island’s mayor said. The plan aims to raise awareness in a “wide-ranging” way to build a self-sustainable future for the island’s community, Pedro Edmunds Paoa told EFE during an interview. The plan is nicknamed “AMOR” (love, in Spanish), which is an acronym of its key principles: self-sustainability, creating enduring improvements, offering development opportunities, and respecting the natural ecosystem.Located some 3,800 km (2,360 mi) off Chile’s western coast, Easter Island, also known as Rapa Nui in the local language, is one of the world’s most coveted tourist destinations, known for its 887 monumental statues, called moai. However, its beaches are severely polluted with plastic that floats its way onto the island, and Rapa Nui also has a severe waste management problem. To make matters worse, 66.8% of the island suffers some degree of erosion, and rising sea levels threaten its shores. The goal of “AMOR” is to “attain self-sustainability and preserve our natural resources” by means of “changing our way of living, taking care of our health and respecting each other,” Paoa said. The 20-year plan was launched in 2014 and has become part the slogan of the island’s government – “Rapa Nui con AMOR” (Rapa Nui with love). The plan took center stage in the First Summit of Local Governments of Chile, which took place on the island last week. One of the key elements of the plan is to provide environmental education to children, by means of the Rapa Nui Environmental Education Network. The network also organizes beach cleanup campaigns and presentations to show people how to reuse and recycle, and even how to create their own vegetable gardens. The plan also includes the construction of a waste management plant that will take advantage of 90% of the waste produced on the island through recycling, reusing, worm composting and incineration. To fight erosion, which especially affects the region surrounding Poike volcano, 47.8 hectares (118 acres) have been reforested, mainly with casuarina equisetifolia or Australian pine trees.Attaining self-sustainability also depends on limiting the negative impacts of tourism, as the island has 7,750 residents and a territory of just 163.6 square km (63 sq.

PRN-Latino News from mikenova (16 sites)
Juventus Downs Cagliari 3-1 in Serie A ROME – Juventus beat Cagliari 3-1 this Saturday in the 11th round of the Italian Serie A and, propelled by goals scored by Paulo Dybala and Juan Guillermo Cuadrado and an assist by Cristiano Ronaldo, came away with the win.In doing so, Juventus scored its 10th win in 11 league games and reestablished a lead of six points over Napoli and Inter Milan, which share second place and won their respective matches by a landslide – 5-1 against Empoli and 5-0 against Genoa. It took Juventus just 44 seconds to get on the scoreboard against Cagliari, when Dybala took an assist from Rodrigo Betancur in the box and booted it into the net.But for now, Cagliari withstood the pressure and at the 36th minute got a great goal by Joao Pedro to tie the score at 1-1.However, in just 120 seconds, Juventus was back in the lead at 2-1, thanks to an unfortunate deflection by Filip Bradaric into his own goal in his attempt to block a fast low shot by Douglas Costa. In the lead once more, Italy’s reigning champion scored its third when, in a counterattack, Cristiano Ronaldo served up an easy pass from outside the box to Cuadrado, who scored the final goal of the game, making it 3-1 at the 87th minute.
