PRN-Caribbean News from mikenova (15 sites)
Commemorative Coin with Poor Likeness of Spain’s Princess Leonor Goes on Sale MADRID – A special issue coin commemorating the 1,300th anniversary of the founding of the Iberian kingdom of Asturias went on sale on Monday bearing what some observers have called a poor representation of the elder daughter of the kings of Spain.Leonor, Princess of Asturias, who is first in line to inherit the Spanish throne, appears for the first time engraved on a coin alongside the profile of her father, King Felipe VI.The 30 euro ($34), 18 gram (0.6 ounces) silver coin shows the left profile of what looks more like a grown woman than a 12-year-old girl. When the collectible coin was first presented in July, the artwork was criticized because it was extremely difficult to recognize the princess, while the king’s face reflected a true likeness. The Spanish Mint intends to mint up to one million coins whose reverse side shows a coat of arms representing Spain’s oldest principality, combined with the Spanish flag and a circular legend that reads: “1,300 anniversary of the Kingdom of Asturias.”The legend on the coin’s obverse side reads, “Felipe VI y Leonor Princesa de Asturias” including the word “España” (Spain)” and the year it was minted; 2018.The coin includes the latest safety measures including a laser-cut quadruple latent image.

Latin American Herald Tribune: Former Croatian PM Sentenced to 2 Years Prison for Corruption Charges

PRN-Caribbean News from mikenova (15 sites)
Former Croatian PM Sentenced to 2 Years Prison for Corruption Charges ZAGREB – A former Croatian prime minister was on Monday sentenced to two and half years in prison on account of receiving illegal income from an Austrian bank in 1994.Ivo Sanader, who was prime minister of Croatia between 2003-2009, received an illegal payment of 3.6 million kunas ($560,000) from an Austrian bank, Hypo Alpe Adria Bank, which was dismantled in 2014.The judges of the Zagreb Court said on Monday that Sanader would have to return the funds to the Croatian treasury. The illegal payment came from a loan the bank awarded the government to put towards purchasing buildings for international diplomatic activities, of which Sanader got 5 percent. The former PM’s defense said they would appeal, stating Sanader had already served half the sentence. The prosecutors said they would also appeal due to what they considered to be a lax ruling.Sanader, 65, has been embroiled in several corruption scandals, including the embezzlement of around 11 million euros involving the Croatian and Hungarian petrol companies (Ina and Mol respectively), but the trial was suspended. In 2014, Sanader was sentenced to 9 years prison for the appropriation of 10 million euros, however, the sentence was annulled based on procedural errors and his retrial started in 2016.In 2017, Sanader was sentenced to four and half years prison in relation to the embezzlement of funds in 2009 for the purchase of a state building for the Agricultural Ministry, a sentence yet to be confirmed by the upper courts.
