PRN-Latino News from mikenova (16 sites)
Former Croatian PM Sentenced to 2 Years Prison for Corruption Charges ZAGREB – A former Croatian prime minister was on Monday sentenced to two and half years in prison on account of receiving illegal income from an Austrian bank in 1994.Ivo Sanader, who was prime minister of Croatia between 2003-2009, received an illegal payment of 3.6 million kunas ($560,000) from an Austrian bank, Hypo Alpe Adria Bank, which was dismantled in 2014.The judges of the Zagreb Court said on Monday that Sanader would have to return the funds to the Croatian treasury. The illegal payment came from a loan the bank awarded the government to put towards purchasing buildings for international diplomatic activities, of which Sanader got 5 percent. The former PM’s defense said they would appeal, stating Sanader had already served half the sentence. The prosecutors said they would also appeal due to what they considered to be a lax ruling.Sanader, 65, has been embroiled in several corruption scandals, including the embezzlement of around 11 million euros involving the Croatian and Hungarian petrol companies (Ina and Mol respectively), but the trial was suspended. In 2014, Sanader was sentenced to 9 years prison for the appropriation of 10 million euros, however, the sentence was annulled based on procedural errors and his retrial started in 2016.In 2017, Sanader was sentenced to four and half years prison in relation to the embezzlement of funds in 2009 for the purchase of a state building for the Agricultural Ministry, a sentence yet to be confirmed by the upper courts.

Rights Group Decries Situation of Indigenous People in Peru LIMA – River pollution in the Amazon rainforest and education gaps affecting the some 55 indigenous communities in Peru are a few of the problems denounced in a report presented on Monday by the National Human Rights Coordination (CNDDHH).The document is to be submitted to the International Labor Organization (ILO), a UN agency that monitors compliance of signatory governments with Convention 169, a document codifying the rights of indigenous peoples.“We want to submit this alternative report on Peru’s compliance with Convention 169 to the ILO’s Committee of Experts in Geneva ,” Luis Hallazi, head of the CNDDHH bureau for indigenous people, told EFE, adding that he hopes to get the organization to demand that the country meet the criteria in a hearing in November. The report analyzes an assertion made by the third indigenous community census – which the organization believes to have been incorrectly carried out last year – that as many as 25 percent of Peruvians identify as members of an indigenous people. The report also denounces several cases of pollution of rivers and various other water sources in the Peruvian Amazonia, including an oil spill in 2016 in the Chiriaco region, which greatly affected the health of dozens of Awajun communities. The CNDDHH also decried the government’s poor job at reducing education and health gaps, especially in the case of indigenous women, of whom the organization said only 31 percent reach secondary school.Hallazi said that the implementation of Convention 169, which took effect more than 20 years ago in Peru, is “very deficient.”
